A message from the Ambassador

   Dr. Norbert Baas

A very warm welcome to the visitors of this website aiming at providing a comprehensive overview on German-Indonesian development cooperation.

As our joint logo states, we are “partners in development”. This partnership is filled with life by different organisations on both the German and Indonesian side. Our development cooperation has been a key facet to our rich and colourful bilateral relations and goes back to the 1950s. I am happy to be able to say that Germany is one of the largest bilateral donors supporting the development of this beautifully diverse country, Germany’s biggest partner in South East Asia.

We are ready to continue this cooparation with the same enthusiasm as before. At the same time we are exploring new ways for instance by making good use of debt swaps. Germany was the first creditor country to offer Indonesia debt swap arrangements thereby facilitating a substantial reduction of the debt burden on the Indonesian society. Five debt swap agreements between the Government of Indonesia and the Federal Republic of Germany have so far been implemented. They have become shining examples for other states.

I hope that this website will help you navigate through the mecanisms of German development cooperation, its structure and partners as well as the focal areas that Indonesia and Germany have agreed upon. They are climate change/forest, decentralisation and good governance, as well as economic reforms.

Enjoy browsing this website!
